Birding in Southern Ecuador

September 26 - October 9, 2020

Our Southern Ecuador tour visits many well-known birding hotspots and lodges in the southern part of this incredible country. We will be visiting a variety of elevations and habitats which will lead to an impressive and diverse list of species.

Our tour will start with a visit to El Cajas National Park. This is the highest elevation we'll visit (around 12,000 feet). Highlight species might include Andean Condor, Tit-like Dacnis, Violet-throated Metaltail, Red-rumped Bush-Tyrant, Bar-winged and Stout-billed Cinclodes, and Giant Conebill.

From there, we will stop at several great lodges and reserves including Umbrellabird Lodge, Jorupe Reserve, Tapichalaca Reserve, and others! A few of the many highlight species may include Pale-headed Brushfinch, El Oro Parakeet, El Oro Tapaculo, Watkin’s Antpitta, Henna-hooded and Rufous-necked Foliage-Gleaners, Gray-breasted Flycatcher, Jocotoco Antpitta.

We will also visit the Bomboscara area located at a bit lower elevation on the eastern side of the mountains. This is a great place to see Amazonian Umbrellabird, Coppery-chested Jacamar, Highland Motmot, Andean Cock-of-the-rock, Olive Finch, and a variety of tanagers.
